Self Portrait as a Spitfire

Self Portrait as a Spitfire

Built from the original 1939 blueprints of a RAF Supermarine Spitfire, this abstract daybed is a replica of the British fighter planes wing. Using over 6 full hides of leather, the daybed is fully upholstered, hand-dyed, and waxed. The backrest is a leather mold of my own body, my own form taking cover under the skin of the wing. This piece discusses personal identity during wartime through the form of a heroic symbol such as a crashed Spitfire wing.
