In 1943, Hans Knoll of the American furniture manufacturer Knoll advised the construction of wooden Japanese and German villages in Idaho for the U.S. military’s practice of firebombing towards the end of WWII 2 years later, Dresden was firebombed by the USAAF resulting in thousands of civilian casualties using methods learned at the test site constructed by Knoll in IdahoAfter the war, Knoll produced designs by Jens Risom (a Danish American designer and army soldier). Risom’s woven designs, used defunct parachute webbing as it was readily available in a time of rationing. His furniture became a mid-century staple, making its way into Playboy and the Oval Office.
